EUROPE 2000 ITINERARY June 10 New Orleans (or other locations**) - Amsterdam Warning: Arrive at least 1 1/2 hours before your flight to avoid being bumped from the "packed" flights going to Europe this summer. 11 Amsterdam - stroll through the quaint streets lining old canals - visit the Van Gogh Museum and/or the Rijksmuseum, Ann Frank House - take a canal boat ride 12 Amsterdam - continue with 6/11 - depart for Ghent late approximately 4pm. 13 Morning stroll through Brugge-afternoon tour with local artist and teacher in historic Ghent - Evening in Brussels - lighting of the magnificent Grant Place 14 Ghent - Monet's Garden at Givergny - Paris orientation tour including Eifel Tower, Place de La Concorde, Place Vendome, Place des Voges (inspired Jackson Square in N.O.) La Defence, Champs Elysee, Arch of Triumph, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame (by bus). 15 Paris - visit the museums of your choice and/or return to some of the places seen on the 14th. Spend more time in selected projects indicated for 6/16. 16 Paris - Optional Three Mile walk with guide through the Viaduc des Arts and Promenade Plantee (see Feb. 2000 Land. Arch. Magazine), Parc Citroen, Park De La Villette, Jardin Atlantique, Parc Bercy (as many as time allows) 17 Paris - Vaux Le Vicomte in morning; www.vaux-le-vicomte.com - Versailles in afternoon 18 Paris - Malters near Lucerne 19 Lucerne - Cruise the magnificent lake of Lucerne to Flueln - then cross the alps via tunnel to Stresa and take a boat to Isola Bella - Milano - stroll through the Galleria from La Scala to Piazza Duomo. Visit with local university faculty. 20 Milano - Portofino; have lunch and savor the picturesque harbor - Pisa to see the famous leaning tower - Lucca, a walled mediaeval city - Montecatini Termi, one of the most famous old European Spas. Take the funicular up to Montecatini Alto. Visit one or more spas. Time allowing, Villa Garzoni - fantastic topiaries. 21 Montecatini - San Gimignano, the "Manhattan" of Italy with its medieaval towers Siena, visit the famous Piazza del Campo and Duomo - Bagnaia near Viterbo, Villa Lante - Rome 22 Rome - visit the Forum, Campigdolio, Coliseum, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona (don't forget to stop at cafe Tre Scalini and have a "Tortufo"!, Trevi Fountain, St. Peters, Sistine Chapel. 23 Rome - Pompei tour with professional guide Naples (time allowing) to visit the National Archeological Museum - Rome or remain in Rome for the day. 24 Rome - do what was missed on 6/22, or optional trip to Hadrian's Villa and Villa Gregorian in Tivoli. If the fountains are operational, visit Villa D'Este - depart for Montecatini late afternoon. 25 Montecatini - Settignano - Villa Gamberaia - Florence, Piazza Signoria, Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Belvedere Michelangelo, Accademia (view Michelangelo's unfinished sculptures to see how they emerge from the marble, or Uffizi Gallery - depart for Venice late afternoon. 26 Venice - take the boat from the hotel to St. Marks Square, stroll the back alleyways to the Ponte Rialto, the famous Venice Market, return to hotel if you can't take any more of the beauty of Venice and relax on the beach. 27 Venice - depart for Kitzbuhl midday. 28 Kitzbuhl - Konigsee, electric boat ride on the magnificent Alpine Konigssee that lies below Hitler's old retreat - Salzburg 29 Salzburg - stroll the quaint streets, visit Mirabelle Palace, Mozart's House, try to get concert tickets for the evening, eat, drink and be merry at the Augustiner Keller. 30 Salzburg - Prague - walk across the beautiful Charles Bridge, view the famous Astrological Clock in main square. July 1 Prague - Walk up the hill to the historic district near the Prague Castle and view the "fairy tale" cityscapes. Stroll through the Mala Strana's cobbled streets and visit the Jewish Quarter home of the oldest synagogue in Europe, built in 1270. Remember that in Prague it is claimed that eating food is the excuse to drink the famous beer. Budvar is the original Budweiser recipe. 2 Prague - Rothenburg a quaint old medieval town - Dinkelsbuhl, another medieval town - Heidelberg, the setting for the "Student Price" and home of the famous old university. Visit Heidelberg Castle on the mountain, see the giant beer barrel and view the city from the terrace overlooking the city; walk the Hauptstrasse pedestrian zone past the Heiliegengeist Church, pack all of your goodies. 3 Heidelberg - Frankfurt - New Orleans, etc. Notes: Some events are prepaid. Other villas, gardens and museum, etc. will be paid for by individuals. Budget $35-70 for optional entry fees. Other costs will be metro tickets in Paris, boat transportation in Venice and other local transportation. It is very important that each person have an "individual" itinerary. Everyone is strongly encouraged to break away from the group and to explore.
