LA 1151 ANALYSIS PROJECT (100 POINTS)

This project is intended to allow you to apply what you have learned during the semester in this class.  While preparing it, you should consider points that have been discussed in lectures and in the readings.  Make sure that your final product clearly demonstrates that you have done so.

To do:  Find an area on the LSU campus.  DO NOT CHOOSE A MAINTENANCE PROBLEM FOR THE PROJECT.  DO NOT CHOOSE A SIMPLE YES OR NO SITUATION SUCH AS, “The street is dark, add lights.  The sidewalk is trashy, clean it.  The equipment is broken, fix or replace it.”  Choose a project with multiple opportunities for improvement.  DO NOT CHOOSE A PRIVATE RESIDENCE.  It should be a civic/social type of project that will benefit the public in general.  It should not be limited to beautification and cleanup issues, although those can be included in the issues covered.

Determine what problems and/or opportunities exist for improvement.  Explain the situation with captioned photographs, maps and diagrams.  Then prepare a chart which contrasts the “Problems/Opportunities” and proposed “Solutions”.  Use knowledge gained from lectures and readings to make your points strong and clear.

Inventory and Analysis

Inventory

Make a map of the site on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.  The paper may be graph or blank paper.  Include the boundaries of the site, existing roads, pathways, benches, trees, trashcans, etc.  Put a scale on the map, i.e. 1”= 20’.  The scale does not have to be exact but fairly close.  The map can be hand drawn.  Make sure the map is neat and the writing legible.  The map is intended to help you graphically explain what exists on the site.  Also, take 8-10 photos that visually describe your site.

Analysis

Visit your site several times at different times of the day.  Get a feeling for the site.  Determine how the site is used.  Who uses this site?  How many people use this site?  What do people generally do at this site?  What kind of circulation patterns-pedestrian pathways, vehicular circulation- do you see?  Indicate problems and opportunities for improvements.  Write your analysis in paragraph form.  The analysis can be up to one page typed- no more.

TURN IN April 26:  map and analysis sheet      KEEP YOUR PHOTOS FOR THE NEXT PART.

Research and Presentation

  1. Find examples that illustrate improvements that you would recommend for the site.  You MUST find a minimum of 4.  You can suggest more if you want.  Look in Landscape Architecture Magazine, other magazines, books, take photos of places you think are good examples, or make your own drawings based upon the examples found during your research. Also, you may draw additional explanatory maps or diagrams if needed.  Make Xerox copies of photos from books and magazines.

  1. Make a problem solution chart .  The correct format should contrast the problem/solution side-by-side.  See the example posted outside Room 310. THIS CHART MUST INCLUDE AT LEAST FOUR IMPROVEMENTS.

Problem

Seating- no seating is available for soccer fans.  Not enough seating in play area for parents.

Solution

Provide numerous sets of bleachers along the perimeter of the fields.  Add clusters of benches and tables in play area- creates comfortable environment.

TURN IN:  May 8, 2002

  1. Turn in a bibliography on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. It shall show the sources of information from your research.

  1. Presentation- Paste problem/solution chart on a 20 x 30 sheet of poster board-please keep it at this size.  Also include photos of existing conditions and illustration, photo, etc. for improvement.  Do this for each problem-solution that you have listed.  So, each problem/solution example will have one existing conditions photo and one improvement photo, illustration, etc.  Please come to Room 310 to look at example projects for layout.
